Underwriting is the process of compiling and analyzing all of the financial aspects of a deal (including rental income, debt, equity, development budget, operating budget, etc.) in order to obtain approval from the entities providing loans or other financing for a project. This process is typically done in multiple linked tabs of an Excel spreadsheet. Ultimately, a project’s sources and uses must be equal to each other to get approval.
